Because I’ve worked inside the marketing department of a medical institution, I understand as well as anyone that it can be difficult and sometimes frustrating when trying to find a marketing or branding firm to support your efforts. It seems like the companies who truly understand the world of healthcare – who understand how to build a brand for that attracts patients to a university health system, for example – simply don’t understand the world of higher education. They don’t know the ins and outs of recruiting graduate students to clinical and biomedical science programs, nor do they understand the critical work of appealing to donors, maintaining relationships with alumni or adhering to the highest standards set by the accrediting bodies. On the other side of the coin, there are marketing and branding firms that specialize in higher education; unfortunately, they don’t often understand graduate studies, academic medicine, the marketing nuances of running a university’s clinical operations, the importance of their clients’ federally funded research programs, or the relationships universities maintain with hospitals and other clinical sites.
When it comes to major branding, marketing and communications initiatives, institutions with healthcare education programs have had to choose between those two very limiting options. But they’ve always deserved a partner who understands FERPA and HIPPA.
